Emma Award 3: Carlos Beltran

The St. Louis Cardinals keep rolling as Carlos Beltran earns this week’s Emma Award, following suit with David Freese in week one and Lance Lynn in week two. And these picks are all coming from a huge Chicago Cubs fan.

The outfielder batted .350 this week (7-for-20), but lead the redbirds in walks with 4. He was the only player in the division to homer twice, on back-to-back days against the Cincinnati Reds on the 17th and 18th of April. Seven runs scored, two stolen bags, and 13 total bases round out a good week for the Cards’ big offseason signing.

Thanks to performances from Freese, Lynn, Beltran and others, the Cardinals are still flying high at 11-5 in the National League Central Division.

Last Week’s Awardee

Lance Lynn had another successful start last week, he’s now 3-0. He pitched 7 strong innings, giving up just four hits, a walk, and a home run. He matched his hit total with four strikeouts on the day as well. For the season, he’s got a 1.42 earned run average and a 0.74 WHIP this season.

Lance Lynn’s start was good, but the performance wasn’t exceptional enough to warrant another Emma Award. A.J. Burnett had a nice debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates, going 7 shutout innings, giving up only 3 hits and striking out 7. The Pirates beat the Cardinals 2-0. Starlin Castro continues to roll, he collect 9 more hits this week and his 14 total bases lead the division. Rafael Furcal is probably the closest runner up for this week’s award. He hit .500 this week (12-for-24) with an OPS of 1.222. Those are great numbers for almost a full week of play.
